The Equipment You Planned to Throw Out Is Probably Worth Money

Here is a scenario we see constantly in the KC metro. An office refresh wraps up. A pallet of three-year-old Dell Latitudes, a rack of HP ProLiant servers being replaced with newer generation, and a Cisco Catalyst switch stack coming out of a network upgrade are sitting on the loading dock. The facilities manager has two options written on a Post-it: "Pay someone to haul it" or "Put it in a storage closet and forget about it."

There is a third option. That equipment still has resale value. Not full retail, obviously — it is used enterprise gear. But a three-year-old Latitude 5420 in working condition has a real market price. So does a PowerEdge R640, a ProCurve switch, an EMC array, and an APC UPS. The secondary IT market is active, and we plug into it.

Instead of paying a disposal fee, you sell it to us. We test, grade, and pay you a wholesale rate by check or ACH. Data destruction is included. Pickup is free anywhere in the Kansas City metro. Equipment that does not qualify for buyback gets recycled for free with a destruction certificate anyway, so nothing ends up costing you anything.

What Qualifies for Buyback

We would love to buy everything, but resale value is driven by market demand and condition grading. Here is what lands in the buyback category versus free recycling.

  • Working condition. Powers on, completes boot, no critical hardware failures. Cosmetic wear is fine. Obvious physical damage (cracked screens, snapped hinges, crushed chassis) usually pushes it to recycling.
  • Laptops under 5 years old. Recent-generation CPUs hold value. Older models drop off the buyback curve fast.
  • Servers under 7 years old. Enterprise server generations hold value longer than consumer gear. Newer CPU generations (Intel Xeon Scalable / AMD EPYC) carry premium pricing.
  • Major brands. Dell, HP, HPE, Lenovo, Cisco, Juniper, NetApp, Pure, Apple, and other known enterprise brands. White-box and off-brand gear is evaluated individually.
  • Data can be wiped. If encryption is enabled, keys are available, and drives are healthy. Drives with bad sectors or unreadable headers still qualify, they just go through physical destruction instead of resale.

Anything that does not qualify for buyback still gets free certified recycling with a destruction certificate. Nothing is wasted, nothing costs you.

How the Process Works

STEP 1

Send the list

Email a CSV, your inventory export, or just a plain list. Make, model, quantity, and approximate age is enough to start.

STEP 2

Get a quote

We return a no-obligation quote within 1 to 2 business days. Line-item or lump-sum, your preference.

STEP 3

Schedule pickup

Accept the quote and we schedule a free pickup at your office, warehouse, or data center anywhere in the KC metro.

STEP 4

Test & grade

Equipment arrives at our facility. Each unit is tested, graded for condition, and drives are processed to NIST 800-88.

STEP 5

Get paid

Payment issued by check or ACH along with your Certificate of Destruction and asset report.

Start the process by filling out our pickup form or emailing a list to [email protected].

What We Pay (Honest Numbers)

Nobody likes a vague "we will give you a great price" answer. Here is the real math so you can set expectations before the quote comes back.

We pay based on the current wholesale resale market. That market changes weekly based on CPU generation demand, memory pricing, and broker inventory. Typical recovery for equipment that is 2 to 4 years old, from major brands, working, and with drives that can be wiped falls in the range of 15% to 40% of original retail. Newer equipment trends toward the top of that range. Older equipment, off-brand gear, or units with issues trend toward the bottom.

Several factors drive the final quote: processor generation, RAM and storage configuration, physical condition, battery health (for laptops and UPS units), licensing status (for networking gear), and current market demand for that specific model. Send us your inventory list and we will give you a transparent, itemized quote based on the actual equipment you have — not generic ranges.

Final numbers come after testing. The quote we send is our honest estimate based on the list you provide; the final payment reflects actual tested condition. We do not play games. If grading comes in better than expected, you get more. If something shows up broken that was listed as working, we tell you and adjust.

Why Businesses Use Our Buyback Instead of Dumping

Cost savings. The obvious one. Instead of paying a disposal company to haul equipment away, you get paid. The delta between "pay $1,500 for a pickup" and "receive $6,000 for the same pallet" is a real swing in the IT budget line for the quarter.

Included data destruction. Buyback includes NIST 800-88 compliant drive wiping or physical destruction at no extra charge. You get the Certificate of Destruction auditors want to see. See our data destruction and compliance standards pages for details.

Environmental benefit. Extending the life of a working server for another three years in the secondary market is a far better outcome than shredding it. Reuse-before-recycle is the highest tier of the waste hierarchy.

Speed. Going through a liquidation auction takes weeks or months. Our process takes days. Quote in 1-2 business days, pickup within a week, payment after testing. For quarter-end decommissions with a hard deadline, that speed matters.

Local, in-person, relationship-based. We are twenty minutes from downtown KC, not a national web form that never calls you back. You can visit our facility, talk to the owner, and build a multi-year relationship. Our corporate clients tend to stick around for exactly that reason.

What If It Does Not Qualify?

A huge chunk of every decommission project is gear that is too old, too damaged, or too obscure to carry resale value. That does not mean it becomes your problem. We take it anyway, for free, with the same NIST 800-88 data destruction and the same Certificate of Destruction. Nothing gets thrown away. Nothing costs you.

In practice that means a typical corporate refresh looks like this: 60% of the pallet is eligible for buyback and generates a check, 40% goes into free certified recycling. One pickup, one vendor, one process, one compliance package. No separate disposal contract for the junk.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I expect to be paid?

Typical recovery is 15% to 40% of original retail for equipment 2-4 years old, working, and from major brands. Newer high-demand equipment trends higher; older or off-brand trends lower. Final numbers come after testing and grading.

How fast is pickup?

Most KC metro pickups happen within 3 to 5 business days after you accept the quote. Urgent decommission deadlines can often be handled faster. Pickup is free for businesses.

Is data destruction included?

Yes. Every buyback includes NIST 800-88 compliant wiping or physical destruction with a signed Certificate of Destruction listing drive serial numbers at no additional charge.

Do you only buy new equipment?

No. We prefer laptops under 5 years old and servers under 7, but we evaluate everything. Equipment that does not qualify for buyback still gets free certified recycling with the same destruction certificate.

What about leased equipment?

Leased assets must be returned to the lessor per the lease terms. We can handle equipment your company owns outright or after a lease buyout. We cannot accept leased assets without a written release from the leasing company.
